Training Refugees About Housing
INITIAL ORIENTATION
Every refugee family needs a comprehensive orientation
to their new home so they know how to operate appliances safely,
how to maintain the apartment properly, and what is required
of them as tenants.
The Operational
Guidance which is part of the Department of State’s
Cooperative Agreement require that resettlement agencies conduct
a housing and personal safety orientation within 5 working days
after refugees arrive.
RESOURCES
Mercy Housing has developed a 31-page booklet that
will make your housing orientation easier and more meaningful
for refugees. Every page contains large, brightly-colored illustrations
of “do’s” and “don’ts”.
The booklet addresses basic apartment maintenance, safety and
security, mail and notices, being a good neighbor and energy
conservation. Designed to be used by a case manager during the
initial orientation, it can be left with the family so they
can refer to it later.
The “Welcome” booklet is available in
English, Arabic, Somali and Hmong.

A brochure summarizing the basics of the tenant’s
and the landlord’s responsibilities is also available.
It briefly covers the lease, paying rent, avoiding charges
for damage, moving out and eviction, as well as the landlord’s
responsibility to make repairs and return security deposits.
